Thanks dad

30 January 2014

Major brownie points with Mum and Dad for this Groom. His performance is comfortable and natural. And his heartfelt message reveals a family whose love and support is unquestionable. And then, right when he has them reaching for their hankies, he turns it around with a quickfire punchline thatís tailored to an audience of close family friends. Everyone present seems to get the gag immediately, but for the benefit of any stragglers, he tops it off with a cheeky clarification, and squeezes out two laughs for the price of one at Dadís - and, crucially, his own expense. Oh, and for those of you who missed the literary reference, hereís that notorious Larkin poem in full:

They fuck you up, your mum and dad.
They may not mean to, but they do.
They fill you with the faults they had
And add some extra, just for you.

But they were fucked up in their turn
By fools in old-style hats and coats,
Who half the time were soppy-stern
And half at one another's throats.

Man hands on misery to man.
It deepens like a coastal shelf.
Get out as early as you can,
And don't have any kids yourself.
