The groom holding court at this marquee reception uses his requirement to thank the guests for attending as a launchpad for a lovely little throwaway gag at the expense of a pal at the back of the crowd. It’s a beautifully timed punchline and works for everyone in the audience, regardless of whether or not they actually know poor old ‘Nick’, the target of the speaker’s ribbing. The comical insult is suitably vague, so there’s no chance of actually offending anyone. And if anything, the groom is doing his pal a favour. After all, he won’t have to introduce himself to anyone after the speech. They all know who he is now!
